One mistake that applicants sometimes make on their admission essay is to preach. Whether you are preaching about religion, politics, society, ways of life, or anything else, it can have a negative effect on how you and your essay are received by the admissions committee. Continue reading to learn about why sounding too “preachy” in your personal statement may put off the admissions committee.

Readers hate it when you make them feel uncomfortable

A common negative effect of preaching in your admission essay, or in any essay for that matter, is that it makes the reader feel as though you think you are superior to them. By preaching about your ideas and beliefs, it seems as though you are dictating your personal thoughts and feelings, instead of simply telling them about yourself and who you are. Furthermore, the admissions committee may get concerned about the negative effect that your preachy behavior might have in their school and on the student body.

You don’t want to sound too self-righteous

In line with making your readers feel inferior, preaching in your admission essay makes you come off as self-righteous. By preaching your own beliefs, it is as though you are saying that you are more morally upright, virtuous, or pious than others. This can be a major insult to some people, especially when you specifically write about religions or moral beliefs.

You lose focus on the topic and let your emotions control you

Finally, perhaps the biggest problem with preaching in your admission essay is that you may get off-track with the purpose of your essay. In other words, preaching in your essay is self-destructive and does nothing to build your character, talk about your personality, or introduce yourself to the admission essay. It’s essential to always keep your objectives in mind when writing an essay. With an admission essay, your objective is to write an essay that introduces yourself to the committee and explains to them why you make a good addition to their school. Instead of going off and preaching, why not stick to your objectives and, instead, talk about how your character and personality make a good match for the school you are applying to?
